Paul “Motor” Burns began racing in the early 1960s with his 1963 Ford Galaxie powered by a 390 with a four-speed.
In 1967 Paul took the wheel of the “Spirit of ’76” top fuel dragster, earning Paul status as an early pioneer in the Top Fuel ranks. Paul began his top fuel career in a Logghe-chassis dragster for three years. Paul then went to Haulin’ Chassis and asked Hall of Fame Chassis Builder Maurice Bresnahan to build him a new dragster. Paul and his racing partner Bill Doane ran the dragster with a nitro-burning Super Charger 392 Hemi until 1971, running as fast as 239.36 mph in 6.43 seconds. Paul stepped away from racing to concentrate on his business, but in 1985 he purchased an alcohol dragster, and he and Bill campaigned the “Spirit of 76” in the Top Alcohol Dragster ranks until 1988.
Paul grew up in Marblehead, Mass, graduating from Marblehead High School in 1960. He attended Wentworth School of Technology and started a short-lived career in architecture. Paul soon realized that he was far more interested in working on cars and soon began restoring them for a living. He is well known for his unique fabrication skills and custom aluminum bodies.
Since retiring from racing Paul has continued to produce many unique and custom hot rods from at his company, Motor Incorporated, which he founded in 1978. Over the years, Paul’s company has worked on special design projects for Ford and Chrysler, and they have restored exotic Porsches and Ferraris as well good old American Muscle Cars. Some of his recent creations include a 1932 Ford roadster equipped with a 427 Ford, a 1935 Sedan delivery with a souped-up flathead, and some beautiful work on Hall of Fame Member Keith Hughes’s 1933 Buick.
